The First Sentence based on Combating Illegal Migration and Smuggling of Migrants Law (Law no. 82 of 2016)


The Criminal Court in Alexandria has sentenced 10 people with different prison terms after having condemned them with the crime of organizing illegal smuggling for migrants from Egypt. The owner of the boat bearing illegal migrants, Reda Masoud, has been sentenced 3 years in prison, whereas Mohamed Mohy Mohamed, and his brother Ahmed Mohy Mohamed, Hashem Saad Mohamed and Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed, all sailors on the boat, have been sentenced to 6 years in prison.

The Court has also sentenced Ismail Ismail Ramdan, Ahmed Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, Ahmed Ibrahim Mohamed, Moahmed Yehia Hassan, and Abdel-Satar Abdel-Naby Saad, all of them have worked as brokers in illegal migration, to life imprisonment in absentia and ordered them to return the amounts of LE290,000, and US$76,000,as well as with the expenses of the migrants’ stay and the expenses of returning them to their countries. The boat has also been confiscated.

As the Coast Guard arrested the condemned, the public prosecution had accused them with smuggling migrants illegally from Rashid to Italy, for a large amount of money. It has been found that the nationalities of the migrants included 13 Eritreans, 46 Sudanese, 2 Yemeni, 2 Egyptians, 1 Somali, 25 Syrians, 6 Chadians and 2 Palestinians, totaling of 97 migrants.
